For insurance adjusters
Cause and pre-failure condition, documented before the evidence is hauled away
When a tree or limb fails onto a structure, the coverage question usually comes down to whether the owner knew or should have known. The Cause & Condition Report answers that from the physical evidence, in a standard format, from an arborist with no tree work to sell.
- Examination of the failed section: decay, cracks, included bark, root plate, soil, prior wounds
- Pre-failure condition reconstructed from remains, earlier photographs and aerial imagery
- Failure mode and contributing factors, weather on the date of loss
- Whether the defect was visible to a reasonable owner and whether an arborist inspection would have flagged it
- Dated, numbered photographs; measurements in inches and feet; limitations statement

Questions people ask
What do you need from us?
The loss address, the date of loss, any photographs the insured or the contractor took before cleanup, and whether the debris is still on site. If it is, ask the insured to hold it until we have been out.
How fast can you be on site?
Usually within 2 to 3 business days for a claim; 48-hour report turnaround at a surcharge when the file needs it.
Do you work for carriers, public adjusters, or insureds?
All three, under the same scope, format and fee. The report states who retained it and is otherwise identical.
Do you estimate the tree's value?
Separately, under the CTLA Guide for Plant Appraisal, through Urban Forestry Guide. Cause & Condition and appraisal can be done in one visit.
